Florida School Environment Survey (FSES) Update

Posted 5-29-07

The Florida School Environment Survey (FSES) for middle and high schools was pilot tested this spring in three Florida school districts. Roughly 3,000 students participated. Data from this is being processed and will be used to provide individual schools with information regarding bullying and other forms of delinquency including alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use. We are currently recruiting middle and high schools to participate in the next round of survey evaluation in the fall of 2007.

The FSES is administered free of charge and provides data directly to Florida schools for assessment and to support ongoing prevention programming. Data is not published on individual schools and it is kept anonymous for research purposes. Schools interested in participating in Fall 2007 should contact Jim Clark at 850-410-2522.

SESIR System Web-Based Training Update

Posted 11-13-07

Over 1200 Assistant Principals, Deans or principals from the 30 districts that participated in the Train-the-Trainer workshops in July and September, 2007 are in process, or have completed the SESIR web-based training to date. The web based training teaches those responsible for discipline in the school how to code serious incidents of crime, violence and disruption according to School Environmental Safety Incident reporting requirements.

This online instruction provides key points about the SESIR and discipline reporting system to enhance reporting accuracy as well as over 50 practice scenarios of incidents which users are to code. Guided feedback for each reporting element is provided.

Additional workshops for district coordinators are being planned so the 37 districts remaining will be able to make use of this standardized training for their schools.

Next Train-the-Trainer workshops: Late January, 2008, Safe Schools Institute, Boca Raton. Additional trainings are planned for other locations. Details to follow.
