Research for the Real World

The Center for Criminology and Public Policy Research has more than $20 million in funding and is conducting research that affects public policies across the entire country. The Center's primary goal is to support data collection and research initiatives with application to crime and justice policy that promote social justice.

  • Alliance for the Advancement of Education in Juvenile Justice and Adult Corrections: Florida State University and the Correctional Education Association have created this alliance to provide leadership, direction, and research-driven services to advance education for students in juvenile and adult corrections.
  • Consumer Fraud Institute: Initially funded by a gift from the Florida Attorney General’s Office, the primary mission of CFI is to conduct policy-relevant research on a variety of consumer fraud-related issues.
  • Department of Corrections Drug Treatment Project: This research will determine the effectiveness of substance abuse programs administered by the Florida Department of Corrections (DOC) in reducing recidivism. Study results will be used to inform policy makers of best practices for effective substance abuse correctional programs.
  • Educational Policy Research: Funded by the Florida Department of Education, this project assesses empirical evidence of teacher preparation programs, including organizational structure and curricula design, conducts other educational policy research, and provides preliminary recommendations to develop a restricted access educational data warehouse.
  • Electronic Monitoring: This project is federally funded through the National Institute of Justice. It evaluates the effectiveness of electronic monitoring for specific offender types, identifies explanations for the level of effectiveness, and conducts a cost-benefit analysis.
  • Florida Department of Corrections Collaborative Research: The Center and the Florida Department of Corrections has established a cooperative agreement that brings together their resources, skills, and staff to conduct scientifically based, defensible, and independent research that will inform correctional policy throughout Florida.
  • Juvenile Justice Educational Enhancement Program: 2007 marks the 9th year of this project, which is funded by the Florida Department of Education. The Center conducts annual quality assurance reviews and provides technical assistance to the nearly 200 Florida juvenile justice programs with educational components.
  • National Juvenile Justice Education Data Clearinghouse: To address the lack of research and information available in the field of juvenile justice education, the Juvenile Justice NCLB Collaboration Project collected information and data from states in 2008 and built this resource.
  • Palm Beach Violence Reduction Project: Under contract with the Palm Beach County Criminal Justice Commission, the Center is collecting and analyzing data on crime and gun violence in order to assist in developing an implementation plan to address the county’s violence problem.
