Marianne Henry - Region III
Biographical Information
Marianne Henry graduated from Central Missouri State University with a B.A. in K-12 art education. Before moving to Florida, she completed a master’s in SED/ESE K-12 education from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. In Florida, Henry obtained a K-12 reading certification and became an Exceptional Needs Specialist and Early Childhood through Young Adulthood National Board-certified teacher. Although her formal training provides knowledge, she draws on 25 years of teaching experience in psychiatric hospitals, residential treatment centers, and the juvenile justice system to enhance her skills.
Basing her teaching effectiveness on observations of students, colleagues and administrators, she noticed those who succeed have personal standards in common. Henry believes the personal standards of teachers set the standards for students as well, so teacher must set standards of excellence. She chose to teach challenging students in order to bring expertise and quality to what she felt to be the noblest of professions—teaching.
Teaching Philosophy
“Teaching is an undeniable demonstration that a person cares. To show that I care, I must teach who I am before I teach what I know. To do this, my facial expressions, my presence, tone, attitude, and voice must express my passion for teaching and my desire to positively influence the lives of the youth I teach. Therefore I,
- CREATE a safe learning environment, exciting to curiosity and challenging to intellect that respects and entices the most reluctant learner.
- EMBRACE new technology (takes college courses, attend workshops), emphasize learning as an ongoing process, utilize assessments to meet student’s needs, skills and abilities while teaching to their learning profiles and hemispheric preferences.
- ADAPT clear decisive learning strategies to maximize learning with meaningful, relevant, life-learning experiences.
- IMPLEMENT by reaching out to families and communities as valued partners; I write grants and search for community services and agencies to assist the needs of students and their families. Also, I enlist community volunteers and businesses for their professional skills and abilities to prepare students to return to school and home as successful, well-educated citizens.”
